Prevent GC damage and downtime — From the Desk of Scott Adams

From the Desk of

Scott Adams, GC Business Manager

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

This advice is especially true when performing gas chromatographic analysis of your samples. You cannot afford suspect data, instrument downtime, or possible sample loss. One “ounce of prevention” that you should incorporate into a routine is leak checking your GC system.

Restek’s electronic leak detector is the best way to check for leaks in your GC system, even better than using the GC’s built-in pressure decay test. You should check your GC system regularly for leaks. Suggested times to look for leaks in you GC are when you:

  • Install a column or perform column maintenance.
  • Replace inlet liners and seals.
  • Replace gas cylinders.
  • Reinstall a septum nut after replacing a septum.

Check out this video for ten places to check for GC gas leaks: www.restek.com/video-library/10-places-to-check-for-GC-gas-leaks/

Using both the Restek electronic leak detector’s visual LED display and audible tones, you will be able to pinpoint very small gas leaks quickly and accurately before they can cause damage and downtime. Battery operated, lightweight, and portable, you can use our leak detector on multiple GCs throughout your lab. By incorporating Restek’s electronic leak detector into a regular leak-checking routine, you’ll find that this ounce of prevention is well worth a pound of cure.
